There is no doubt that at one stage or another you have had to put up a fight against ingrown hairs, rest assured that there are some measures to prevent this painful irritation in the future.
Ingrown hairs (razor bumps) is the result of a hair that gets trapped inside the hair follicle or grows back into the skin, this causes redness, swelling and scarring and appears as a red bump on the skin that is unsightly and painful. Often you can see a part of the hair inside the bump or under the skin. Areas with a coarser hair growth is more prone (bikini, beard, armpits) to get affected also more so in men than woman.
Useful tips:
This is indispensable to manage ingrown hairs. Exfoliate 2-3 times per week, especially after waxing or other forms of hair removal. The thicker the layer of dead skin cells on the surface the harder it is for a new, weak, hair to break through. You should also exfoliate your skin before any waxing or shaving takes place to adequately prepare your skin for the treatment.
Use a post-shave product with salicylic acid; avoid products containing alcohol as this will only dry out the skin more.
Avoid shaving too close to the skin as this will cause more irritation. Change your blade often, or try different brands of blades. Shave only in the direction of the hair growth. Do not shave over an already irritated area this will only worsen the situation; avoid shaving over the affected area until the irritation has subsided. Avoid electric type shavers as these can cause disruptions in your hair growth direction.
If you constantly suffer from ingrown after shaving and waxing and you have tried everything in your power to prevent them rather opt for laser hair removal.
Speak to your Skin Care Therapist as to what will be the best approach for you. Most commonly ingrown can be removed with a tweezer and pulling the affected hair out from the follicle to enable it to heal, however doing this at home can be frustrating and can leave your scarred.
