Insight to Acne

by Chamonaye Fillies

Acne is the result of an over active oil gland stimulated by the hormone, testosterone, it prefers the ‘breading grounds’ of the hair follicles on the skin and body, the excess oil and bacterial presence causes the oil to block the pore and thereby forming a plug in the skin which later becomes inflamed with a blemish (pimple, blackhead, whitehead or cysts) as the result. Acne can manifest in different forms on the skin depending on the level of over stimulation and some areas can be affected more than others. With the correct type of treatment acne can be cleared up completely.
3 Main Acne groups:

Non Inflammatory Acne Inflammatory Acne Cystic Acne

Many factors can contribute to acne formation like:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • External Factors ( i.e. weather, pollution)
  • Diet
  • Hygiene
  • Stress

Acne Tips

  • Consult with your Dermatologist or Skin Care Therapist for the best route to clear skin.
  • Before taking any over the counter medicines consult with your dermatologist or Skin Care Therapist make sure that you have knowledge on the medication and all the pro’s and con’s.
  • Never squeeze your blemishes, this can result in permanent scarring, a Skin Care Therapist can extract your blemishes in a safe and effective way.
  • Cleanse your skin twice a day ( do not over cleanse)
  • Clean your make-up brushes regularly with a disinfectant to avoid bacterial manifestations in the bristles.
  • Always remove your make –up completely before retiring for the evening.
  • Do not touch your skin with dirty hands
  • Avoid resting your face on your hands.

Taking Action
When you notice acne break outs consult with your Skin Care Therapist for the best route of action and home care program containing the following steps:

  • Cleanse

Use a gentle cleanser that will not strip the skin leaving it open to bacterial infections and sensitivity (if it burns or if your skin feels very tight after cleansing, your cleanser is to strong), avoid cleansers that has a high soap content ( if it foams too much, avoid it)

  • Tone

This is a very important step for over active skins, it restores balance to the skin and prepares it for further treatment

  • Exfoliation

Even though we do not want to add any additional stimulation to these skins, exfoliation is a vital part in the fight against acne. Your choice of exfoliator would be light and gentle (if you have active pimples avoid a granular scrub), opt for exfoliators working with enzymes that require no rotations thus preventing the spread of bacteria on the skin. Your exfoliator will assist in loosening the solidified oil in your blocked pores as well as prevent future blockages.

  • Mask

Masking on over active skins is a vital step, as it aids in absorbing any excess oil on the skin surface, to do this they can contain clay ingredients which can be drying to the skin if left on too long, thus you will never sleep in a mask intended for an oily skin, you can however take your beauty sleep with it if you are only doing a spot treatment ( small amount of mask on your blemishes only). Acne masks will also have anti-bacterial and healing properties.

  • Moisturize

Miniaturization is a key element in skin care; it restores your natural fluid content as well as your skins lipid levels to ensure locking your moisture in. People with oily skins often prefer a very light moisturizer that may come in a fluid form. Moisturizers intended for oily skins will again contain healing and anti-bacterial properties.

  • Booster/Serum/Spot Treatments

Commonly referred to as skin ‘treats, these are specialized products that can be added to your skin care regimen to add variety or more specialized care to a certain concern.
