Your skin has its own natural exfoliation system, it’s factory is located in the skin’s lower layer, the Dermis, these new cells start a journey to the top layer of the skin, during this time they become more acidic, die and becomes saturated with keratin (this is important to protect your skin from outside elements). The shedding of the outer layer of the skin assists to unclog pores, keep skin clean, reduces acne breakouts, improve texture and reduces the visibility of lines and wrinkles.
As we age the skins natural exfoliation system slows down, when we are babies our turnover rate is about every 14 days, during our teens it slows down to about every 21-28 days, from then on even slower to approximately 30-40 days and after we reach the age of 50 it has almost halted to a rate of about every 60- 90 days. The result of this slowing down is dull, uneven, blotchy, dry and flaky skin.
Since our skins natural exfoliation system slows down we have to physically boost it back up again utilizing exfoliators.
There are 2 main types of exfoliators:
Chemical Exfoliators | Mechanical Exfoliators |
