Plagued by Pigmentation

by Chamonaye Fillies

Patchy pigmentation on the face is a common and noticeable problem, especially for women. Hyper pigmentation in skin is caused by an increase in melanin (pigment), certain factors and conditions causes an over production of this pigment in the skin resulting in dark spots.

There are many factors that can contribute to hyper pigmentation on your skin; the most common factors are hormonal changes, medication, sun exposure and trauma to the skin. People with darker Asian, Mediterranean, or African skin tones are also more prone to hyper pigmentation, especially if they have excess sun exposure.

What should I do when I start noticing pigmentation?

  • Consult with your dermatologist/Skin Care Therapist and establish what is your major contributing factors, this is a crucial step in the treatment process, different factors delivers different pigmentation and need individual care to reach your desired result
  • Once you have established what was a major cause in your pigmentation, prevent further damage firstly by seizing what caused the pigmentation (if possible) and secondly to wear an SPF daily and avoid excessive sun exposure. Some spots especially if caused by hormonal changes should only be temporary, but when exposed to UV rays they settle in permanently
  • Start on a lightening skin care regimen , this will assist you in reaching your goal
  • Be aware of all contra indications to medications that might be prescribed in your treatment process as some medications can stimulate melanin production

Tips for pigmentation:

  • Do not use a SPF higher than 30 ( some might say a SPF 100 is best, but the amount of protection gained from 30 to 100 is not impressive nor is the amount of chemicals in the SPF to get it to a 100)
  • Re- apply your SPF during the day, I cannot stress this enough, one application a day will not protect you for the whole day, I advise to re-apply your SPF every 2 hours or after swimming or excessive sweating for optimum protection
  • Select you SPF carefully, go for a reputable brand or an SPF from a well know skin care house. More expensive is not always better but in the case of skin care you cannot argue that fact, the quantity and quality of the vital ingredients are what you are paying for
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses, protect the affected area to every extent possible
  • Avoid hydraquinone ( in the UAE this product is shockingly available over the counter, contradicting its ban in countries like the  United States, European Union, South Africa, Japan and Australia)
  • Take care with contraceptive pills, unfortunately most woman are not informed by their doctor that the pill can cause pigmentation (most commonly found on the upper lip, temples and brow area) this pigmentation settles permanently when exposed to UV rays
  • Laser treatment helps to erase the skin discoloration
  • Fruit acid peels could be incorporated into your facial to assist in the  removal process
  • Have plenty of water to remove the toxins from your body and give you a glowing skin

Pigmentation can be extremely stubborn in nature and be hard to get rid of but not impossible, listen to your dermatologist/ Skin Care Therapist and follow their instruction. Be dedicated and do not give up hope!
